# Australian States & Territories population atlases Eight maps: New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory. This is the commonly used six-state/two-territory game grouping. Separately administered Jervis Bay Territory and Australia's external territories are outside the mode. Population weights come from **GHS-POP R2023A, epoch 2020, 30 arcseconds** (European Commission Joint Research Centre, CC BY 4.0), using original raster cell centers inside unsimplified Natural Earth 1:10m Admin 1 polygons. Counts are summed, never inferred from city labels or land area. Adaptive rectangular aggregation keeps every map below 10,500 positive cells and 500 KB, while preserving its rounded native masked total. ACT remains at native resolution. Tasmania includes its nearby islands, King Island and the Furneaux Group; remote subantarctic Macquarie Island is excluded. New South Wales includes nearshore islands; remote Lord Howe Island is excluded. The precise scope is displayed in each map's `scope` field and recorded in `provenance.json`. These are modeled 2020 populations, not current census totals. Natural Earth is a general map source; its coasts and the cell-center mask can omit small coastal portions. During scoring, a line crossing an exported cell splits its population in proportion to the cell's area on each side. No synthetic resident weights are added. Natural Earth boundary/city inputs are pinned to commit `ca96624a56bd078437bca8184e78163e5039ad19` and are public domain. See `provenance.json` for source URLs, checksums and access date. Catalog `file` paths are relative to `/data/`. Rebuild with `scripts/data-subdivisions-build.py`; validate with `scripts/data-subdivisions-verify.py`. - Population: - DOI: - Boundaries:
