# Canadian Provinces & Territories population atlases

13 maps: the ten Canadian provinces and three territories, including their islands as represented by the source boundaries. Quebec uses its English UI spelling; `sourceName` retains the Natural Earth label “Québec.” Catalog `file` paths are relative to `/data/`.

Population weights are original counts from **GHS-POP R2023A, epoch 2020, 30 arcseconds** (European Commission Joint Research Centre, CC BY 4.0), masked by unsimplified Natural Earth Admin 1 polygons. Adaptive rectangular aggregation targets no more than 10,500 populated cells and 500 KB per map. Sparse northern territories retain fine detail instead of being coarsened solely because they cover a large area. Integer weights preserve the rounded sum of the native masked counts. No city or area based synthetic populations are generated.

These are modeled 2020 estimates, not current Statistics Canada census totals. Natural Earth coasts and native raster cell-center masking affect small coastal settlements in particular; modeled values for northern territories may differ materially from census values. When a dividing line crosses an exported rectangular cell, the game treats the population as uniform inside that cell for the fractional split.

Boundaries/city labels use Natural Earth 1:10m, public domain, pinned to commit `ca96624a56bd078437bca8184e78163e5039ad19`. Every map includes its scoring scope, exact source information and native aggregation factor. `provenance.json` includes source URLs, SHA-256 checksums and access date. Rebuild with `scripts/data-subdivisions-build.py`; validate with `scripts/data-subdivisions-verify.py`.
