# US States population atlases 51 maps: all 50 states plus the District of Columbia. US territories are not part of this mode. Maps load individually through `catalog.json`; `file` paths are relative to `/data/`. Population weights come from the European Commission Joint Research Centre's **GHS-POP R2023A, epoch 2020, 30 arcseconds** raster. Native nonnegative counts whose cell centers lie inside each unsimplified boundary are summed, then aggregated only when needed to keep a map below 10,500 positive cells and 500 KB. Integer rounding preserves each native masked population total. These are modeled 2020 populations, not current census totals. The game treats population as uniform inside each exported rectangular cell when the dividing line crosses it. Boundaries and city labels come from Natural Earth 1:10m Admin 1 and populated places, pinned to commit `ca96624a56bd078437bca8184e78163e5039ad19`. Natural Earth is public domain; GHS-POP is CC BY 4.0. Coastline and cell-center masking introduce small coastal assignment differences. Great Lakes do not add synthetic residents. Alaska includes the Aleutians, with western islands unwrapped across the antimeridian. Original raster columns wrap by one 43,200-cell rotation; its floating-point difference from exactly 360 degrees is less than 0.000002 degrees. Hawaii includes the eight main islands and adjacent islets, and explicitly excludes the remote Northwestern Hawaiian Islands to keep the inhabited islands readable. DC keeps native resolution.
